Hypnosis for Kids

Article about how hypnosis can benefit your kid by New Jersey Hypnosis Therapist.

Hypnosis is a beneficial treatment in helping kids with medical illnesses. In fact, studies have shown that kids are very “suggestible” and have excellent chances of being helped with hypnosis.

In a study conducted at a pulmonary center for kids from 1998 – 2000, over 300 kids received hypnotherapy (aka. hypnosis) for a variety of symptoms and illnesses. All the kids were having pulmonary problems such as persistent cough, asthma, shortness of breath and chest pain.

Kids had received hypnotherapy (aka. hypnosis) to help with pulmonary symptoms due to psychological issues, side effects of medication, and fear of treatment. Some kids received hypnosis even after medical treatment had been administered because their symptoms had persisted.

Before the one 45 minute session given to each kid, both the child and the parent were introduced to the concept of hypnosis. All questions and concerns were addressed at that time. Each hypnotic sessions was customized to match the child’s preference for administering the hypnosis, and how deep to bring the child. During the scripted portion of the session, the kids were told to “imagine” they had control over their symptoms. Before the session was conclude, the experience was reviewed, and child and parent were encouraged to use self-hypnosis for several weeks.

Out of the 303 participants, 53 needed one additional hypnosis session, and out of those 53, only 22 needed a third session to work on hypnosis (aka. hypnotherapy).

Subsequent evaluations were performed by the pulmonologist, and a self-evaluation was performed by the kids.

  • 81 % of the kids exhibited improvement in their pulmonary symptoms.
  • In some of those cases, the kids reported no symptoms after the first hypnotherapy session.
  • Many other kids saw improvements after the first few weeks.
  • Many reported seeing a decrease in the frequency and intensity of their pulmonary symptoms. No participants reported a decline in health or new symptoms after the hypnotherapy session(s).

The study concluded that hypnotherapy (aka. hypnosis) is a successful complementary treatment to use on kids with pulmonary problems.
